Jeroen Aeles
Biography
Prof. dr. Jeroen Aeles is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Biomechanics at the Faculty of Physical Education & Physiotherapy at VUB (Free University of Brussels) since 2023. He is part of the MOVE (Movement & Nutrition for Health & Performance) Research Group and an active collaborator with the Brubotics Rehabilitation Research Centre (Jette) at VUB. He is also affiliated with the Functional Morphology Research Group in the Department of Biology at the UAntwerpen (University of Antwerp).Dr Aeles is the spokesperson for the Biomechanics Research Team at VUB. His team aims at unravelling the biomechanical aspects of natural (sports, daily activities) and restricted (injury, neurological pathology) movement. He has a particular interest in the neuromuscular system and in probing the Neuromechanics of muscle contraction and movement in general. Through valuable national and international collaborations, he seeks to further our understanding of the Biomechanics and Neuromechanics of movement from a fundamental (animal models, isolated human movement) level all the way to the applied (sports performance, rehabilitation, healthy movement) level. Research keywords include Ultrasound Imaging, Medical Imaging (MRI, DTI, Bi-planar X-ray), Electromyography (incl. intramuscular, high-density), Electrical Stimulation (incl. peripheral nerve and muscle, intramuscular), 3D Movement Analyses, Movement Kinetics, In Situ Animal Surgery and Experimental Techniques.Dr Aeles obtained his PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Biomechanics) from KU Leuven, Belgium in 2017, where he also obtained his Master of Science in Movement Sciences (Biomechanics major) in 2013. After obtaining his PhD, he was a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The University of Queensland, Australia (2018-2019) and at The University of Nantes, France (2020-2022). In 2020 he won a competitive Barron International Research Scholarship, issued by The Pennsylvania State University, USA, to join the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at Penn State for a research collaboration (2022). In 2022 he was awarded a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship, awarded by the European Commission. From September – December 2022 he worked at the Functional Morphology Research Group at the University of Antwerp as a Fellowship holder. Dr Aeles is a former Australian and New Zealand Society of Biomechanics Early-Mid Career Researcher Award winner. He is an active member of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), and the Comparative Neuromuscular Biomechanics (CNB) working group, and an Ally of Advancing Women in Biomechanics (AWB).
